We're kicking off a new tradition where every Thanksgiving we
revisit a cinematic "turkey" - a movie that bombed at the box
office and was reviled by critics and audiences alike. And this
year, that turkey... is a duck.
Yup. The HDYR gang is going all the way back to 1986 to take
another look at the first major misfire from George Lucas
- Howard the Duck. This isn't just a terrible
adaptation that completely betrays the spirit of its source
material, it's also widely regarded as one of the worst films ever
made. In the immediate aftermath of its failure, Lucas boldly
declared that history would regard Howard a lot more
favorably than its detractors did at the time. Well... here we are
three decades later. Let's see.
Topics include: why the original plan to do this as a fully animated film was sidelined, the consequences of turning it into a live-action feature, all of the creepy elements that went completely over our heads as kids, the tonal whiplash that it's never able to reconcile or recover from, the silver lining of its disastrous performance, THAT scene, and much much more!
